Description

The Church of Saint Peter is a Gothic style church built in 1847, designed by William White, for the Peel parish. The tower was rebuilt in 1898. The church is constructed of rubble stone with granite and freestone dressings, with the south-west wall largely rendered. It has gable-ended roofs covered in Delabole slate. The plan is cruciform, incorporating a nave, chancel, north and south transepts and a tower located at the north-west end. The exterior elevations are unaltered, featuring a three-stage embattled tower. A pointed-arched doorway is present, above which is a three-light window with intersecting tracery. Two-light windows are found on the upper stage of the tower. The south-west wall features a porch with a pointed doorway. All original windows contain groups of two, three, or four lancets, set within pointed-arched openings with plate tracery, and have leaded glazing. The interior is simple and lofty, with plastered walls and arch-braced roof structures. A painted zinc reredos screen is present, alongside other fittings dating to the late 19th century.
