Description
The raised pavement, railings, and vaults fronting numbers 1 to 52 Royal York Crescent in Clifton, Bristol, date from the late 18th century to early 19th century. Constructed from limestone ashlar and Pennant flags, the pavement extends up to 10 meters in front of the crescent and features steps leading down to basement areas. Each house has three segmental-arched vaults beneath, and the front elevation showcases these vaults in triple segmental-arched recesses, which are wider in the middle, with most having later garage openings. The left end of the pavement curves inward and includes a flight of steps down, with four additional sets of steps along the pavement leading to ground level at the right end. The interior consists of plain arched vaults. Attached iron railings and stanchions run the full width of the front wall. This feature is part of what is believed to be the longest terrace in Europe and is significant in the view of Clifton from the south. The crescent was initiated in 1791 by James Lockier, likely following a design by William Paty, with construction halting in 1793, resuming in 1809, and concluding in 1820.
