Description
Callandar House, now part of a university hall of residence, dates from the late 18th century. It is rendered with limestone dressings, has lateral stacks, and a slate hipped roof. The building follows a double-depth plan and is in a late Georgian style. It is three storeys and a basement in height, with a four-window front. The front is parapeted, and features a late 19th-century single-storey, ashlar, pedimented porch with a semicircular-arched side doorway and windows. The ground floor windows are 6/6-pane sashes, while the second-floor windows are 3/6-pane sashes. The rear elevation has a central, full-height, canted bay with a moulded coping, and a recessed attic storey. The rear windows are 4/4-pane sashes in flush boxes. The attic windows are a combination of 2/4-pane and paired 8/8-pane sashes.
The interior features a fully panelled rear central room with a marble fireplace. The stair hall has an elliptical arch with fluted pilasters, and a dogleg staircase with an uncut string, column balusters, and square newels. There is wainscot leading to a first-floor hall with another elliptical arch. Callandar House is now incorporated into a single building with Clifton Hill House, connected by a mid-19th-century link and a mid-20th-century extension to the south.
