Description

Hebron Chapel, now used as offices and a studio workshop, was built in 1853 by Henry Crisp. It is constructed of limestone ashlar, with Pennant rubble and limestone dressings, and has a roof that is not visible. The design is Italianate. The building is two storeys high, with a five-window front. The central three windows project forward and feature a pediment. The ground floor is rusticated ashlar to a cornice, with quoins to the rubble first floor, a cornice, and a parapet. Three semicircular arched doorways are centrally positioned, the central one being taller, set in rectangular recesses, with panelled spandrels, raised keys, stained glass fanlights and two-panel doors. The outer windows are semicircular arched with incised voussoirs, and the first-floor windows are semicircular arched with moulded architraves. The pediment has a raised panel inscribed "HEBRON CHAPEL 1853." The sides of the building have seven windows, with the rear pair located in projecting wings two bays long; the wing on the right has an open ground-floor porte cochere with square columns, moulded capitals and top blocks. A square, louvred cupola is on the roof. The interior was not inspected. Attached to the chapel are cast-iron railings and gates between ashlar capped piers. The chapel is recognised as one of the earliest Italianate chapels in Bristol and a notable example of the style.
