Description
North View Cottage and its attached annexe date from the mid-18th century and were altered in the 19th century. The cottages are constructed of squared, white Lias stone with Pennant stone dressings, and have a tiled roof. They are arranged in a single depth, with a rear outshut. The two-storey building has a four-window front. The right-hand cottage, dating to the 18th century, has a symmetrical facade with wrought-iron railings and boot scrapers on either side of the Pennant steps leading to a 20th-century door. A deep segmental arch is supported by scrolled timber brackets carved with leaves, and incorporates a wrought-iron lamp basket. The windows are flat-arched with Pennant stone keys, and contain 20th-century metal casements with brick linings. The annexe, butted onto the left side, has a plain doorway with a 20th-century door and two 20th-century dormers. The interior of North View Cottage features a central hall, a dogleg staircase with turned balusters, cupboards flanking the fireplace in the left-hand room (fitted with HL-hinges), and a fine plaster cornice and ceiling with rocaille foliage and classical relief heads in the right-hand room. The property includes attached front railings leading to the steps. It represents a rare survival of a small 18th-century house within later 19th-century housing developments.
