Description
Dial Cottage is a cottage built in 1812 by John Nash and George Repton for J.S. Harford. It features a combination of random rubble and brick construction, with brick lateral stacks and a half-hipped roof covered in stone tiles. The cottage has a single-depth plan and is designed in a picturesque style, comprising one storey and an attic with a one-window range.
On the left side, there is a pent roof over a plank door that extends back and to the right, while the right side has a service extension beneath a brick wall. The windows include leaded casements, with a three-light front bay and two-light windows in the gable above. An exterior stack is located on the right, featuring three round stacks made with faceted cut bricks and a moulded cap.
Although the interior was not inspected, it is reported to include a winder stair, a sitting room, and a pantry. The cottage was arranged by Harford for his retired employees and is part of an irregular layout that is considered the "nec plus ultra of picturesque layout and design" according to Pevsner. The cottages are situated around an open green and were modernised around 1975.
