Description
Blaise Hamlet's Dutch Cottage is a Grade I listed building constructed in 1812 by John Nash and George Repton for J.S. Harford. This cottage features random rubble walls, brick lateral stacks, and a thatched hipped roof, showcasing a picturesque style. It has a single-depth plan and is a single-storey building with an attic, consisting of a one-window range. An open porch on the right leads to a plank door, and a pent roof extends over the front and side, creating an open bay to the right with bracketed sides and a bench, raised above the porch. The cottage has leaded casements, a canted oriel window on the front, a small bracketed attic oriel in the front gable, and a half dormer on the right. There are paired diagonally-set stacks on the left-hand elevation. The interior has not been inspected but is reported to include a rear winder stair, a sitting room, and a back pantry. This cottage was arranged by Harford for his retired employees and is part of a unique layout that is considered the pinnacle of picturesque design. The cottages are arranged around an open green and were modernised around 1975.
