Description

A terrace of eight houses built around 1840, possibly designed by RS Pope, is located on the north side of Apsley Road, Clifton, Bristol. The houses are constructed with limestone dressings and have a double-depth plan. They are in a late Georgian style, each with three storeys, an attic, and a basement, and feature a two-window range. The formal terrace includes a right-hand pair of houses where the upper floors are set back behind an open arcade, which may have been intended to serve as the centre of a larger terrace. The facade is characterized by pilasters, a continuous cornice, and a coped attic storey. The ground floor is banded, with the right-hand doorways featuring segmental heads, 3-light overlights, and four-panel doors. The ground-floor windows are tripartite with 6/6-pane sashes flanked by 2/2-pane sashes. Three of the houses have canted ground-floor bays. Above, console cornices support the first-floor windows, some of which have wrought-iron balconies. Second-floor windows feature 6/6-pane sashes, and the attic windows are 3/3-pane sashes. The right-hand pair of houses present a three-window range, incorporating an arched first-floor arcade supported by square piers with wreaths on the entablature, and topped with a parapet. The right-hand door on this pair has a semicircular arch and a two-leaf door. Rear staircases are lit by semicircular arched windows. The interior features dogleg staircases with turned balusters, panelled shutters, and doors.
