Description
A pair of attached houses dating from around 1780, located in Dowry Square, Hotwells, Bristol. The houses are constructed of stucco with limestone dressings, featuring party wall stacks and a pantile mansard roof. They are built on a double-depth plan and represent the Late Georgian style. Each house is three storeys high with an attic and cellar, arranged as a single-window range. The symmetrical design incorporates pilaster strips to the coping. The outer doorways are made of ashlar and have semicircular arches, bracketed cornices, metal fanlights, and six-panel doors. Number 14 has a mid-19th century ashlar canted bay with keys and a parapet. The windows are 6/6-pane horned sashes, larger on the first floor, with one dormer window each. The interior of Number 14 reveals a rear side dogleg winder stair with stick balusters and column newels, panelled shutters, and two brick vaulted cellars. The property includes attached cast-iron front basement area railings and gates, finished with urn finials. The houses possess group value due to their contribution to the architectural character of the square.
