Description

Number 10 is an attached house located in Dowry Square, Hotwells, built around 1746 by George Tully for Richard Matthews. The house features limestone ashlar and render over brick, with brick gable and party wall stacks, and a pantile double-pile roof. It is designed in an early Georgian style and has three storeys, a basement, and an attic, with a four-window range. The ground floor is rusticated, and there are moulded bands on the ground and first floors, topped with a moulded coping. A prominent doorway is situated between the outer windows, featuring fluted Ionic pilasters, a pulvinated frieze, a segmental pediment, and a six-panel door. The segmental-arched windows have keyed architraves and sill blocks, with 6/6-pane sashes, and there are two hipped dormers. Inside, the entrance hall boasts a good open-well staircase, along with panelled doors and shutters. The house is accompanied by attached entrance walls, capped piers, and wrought-iron railings for the basement area. Dowry Square was established in 1720 by Tully, with construction continuing until 1750. The square originally featured brick houses with five-window central designs and three-window flanking ones, most of which have since been rendered and altered.
