Description

Number 12 is a house, now a school, dated 1750 and possibly designed by Thomas Paty, built by Richard Matthews. It features roughcast walls with limestone dressings, gable stacks, and a pantile double-pile roof. The building is in the Mid Georgian style, with three storeys, an attic, and a basement, arranged in a double-depth plan and displaying a five-window range. The symmetrical front has rusticated pilaster strips leading to a moulded coping. The entrance has curved steps, shallow blocked jambs, and a stepped key above an 8-panel door. The windows have cambered heads with five stepped voussoirs, a console pediment above the central first-floor window, and a console cornice above the second floor. The ground and first floors have 6/6-pane sashes, with thick bars on the first floor, while the second floor features 3/6-pane windows. There is a late 18th-century timber canted bay to the right with 8/8-pane sashes in flush frames. The rear elevation includes a central shallow, gabled stair block. Inside, the entrance passage is divided by a semicircular arch with a key and cornice. The rear dogleg stair has an uncut string, column balusters, paired newels, and a ramped, moulded rail. The interior also includes plain fire surrounds, 4-panel doors, and panelled shutters. The house has attached front area walls, railings, and piers. Dowry Square was laid out by George Tully in 1720, with construction continuing until 1750.
