Description

St Philip's Public Library is a library built in 1896 by WV Gough, located on Trinity Road in Bristol. The building features red and yellow striped brickwork with limestone dressings and a slate roof, designed in the Jacobethan style. It is two storeys high and has a six-window range, with a symmetrical front that includes a central bay that projects slightly. This bay is adorned with a balustrade featuring square urns at the corners and topped with a square, louvred cupola capped by a dome and weather vane.

The main entrance consists of a round-arched door framed by brick pilasters. Above the entrance is a detailed heraldic device depicting unicorns holding a Bristol coat of arms, set beneath a scrolled pediment supported by dwarf Ionic pilasters. The inscription "VIRTUE ET INDUSTRIA" is located below this feature. The central bay is finished with a parapet panel that reads "ST PHILIPS PUBLIC LIBRARY/ 1896," and it includes a bellcote with a clock.

The building's windows are chamfered mullion and transom types with elliptical heads, arranged in rectangular architraves. The ground floor features two transoms and three-light windows, while each side of the central bay has two-light windows. Each side of the library also has a full-height canted bay with a nine-light window. The windows are leaded and stained casement types.

To the left of the main structure is a single-storey block that has a large round-arched doorway supported by square responds with carved capitals, along with a pediment and cartouche above. The front area is enclosed by brick and ashlar striped piers and steel railings.

Inside, the library is divided by three semicircular arches with coffered intrados. The roof features trusses with three queen posts and arched braces.
