Description

A terrace of five houses built between 1790 and 1793, with work halted and later completed in 1838. The terrace was designed by John Eveleigh. The houses are constructed with limestone dressings, have party wall stacks, and a pantile mansard roof. They follow a double-depth plan and are in a Late Georgian style. Each house has three storeys, an attic, and a basement. They each feature a three-window range. The raised, curved terrace is articulated by giant pilasters to a cornice and parapet, with a rusticated band to the ground floor. Steps lead up to semicircular-arched doorways, which have plate-glass fanlights and six-panel doors, although the entrance to number one is situated on the right-hand return. There are six-over-six sash windows, and dormers with pierced parapets. Full-width timber first-floor balconies with wrought-iron lattice railings are present. Numbers one and two have deeper rear elevations and higher basements. The interior was not inspected. Attached to the front of the basement area are spear-headed railings and gates. The terrace was originally intended to be grander, but construction was temporarily halted, with only 11 houses started. Ultimately, only five were completed to the original plan, while numbers six to eleven were built to a different design by Charles Dyer.
