Description

A pair of attached houses, built around 1891 by Henry Dare Bryan. The houses are constructed from snecked limestone rubble with limestone and brick dressings, brick ridge and gable stacks, and a concrete tile gableted roof. They are arranged with a double-depth plan and designed in the Queen Anne style. Each house stands three storeys high, with a three-window facade. The symmetrical pair features paired gables projecting from the centre, with sill and lintel bands, string courses, side entrances, and stone-framed mullion and transom casements on the ground floor. Segmental-headed doorways have mullion overlights and panelled two-leaf doors with a central raised diamond design. The front gables are topped with brick and stone relieving arches, incorporating a three-light ground-floor window with a cartouche, paired first-floor windows with alternate long jambs, and grotesque heads above. A three-light timber casement sits in the second storey, beneath a banded shaped gable. The outer ground-floor bays project outward, supporting a balustraded balcony with four lights and a central segmental-arched transom. A first-floor stone cross window is present, with brickwork bands between the lintel and the coved eaves. Casement dormers are located above the eaves to the front and ends. The interior remains uninspected. Associated with the houses are attached front garden walls and piers, topped with ball finials. The development reflects the influence of Norman Shaw's Bedford Park, dating from 1881.
