Description
A pair of attached houses, built around 1891 by Henry Dare Bryan. The construction incorporates snecked limestone rubble and ashlar with limestone dressings, a brick second storey, tile-hung gables, a brick ridge stack, and a concrete tiled roof. They are designed with a double-depth plan and are in the Queen Anne style. Each house is three storeys high with a three-window facade. The houses are very similar in appearance, featuring stone-framed mullion and transom windows on the ground floor, and mullion windows on the first floor. Each has a battened two-leaf door with a mullion overlight, sheltered by a bracketed, tiled canopy under a keyed brick oval window. To the left of each door is a full-height gabled bay with three-light windows; the lower part of the bay is tile-hung and the second floor has nine-over-one pane sash windows within a timber frame. The second floor itself is tile-hung with casement windows beneath a timber-framed gable. These features are set either side of a party wall, with three-light and two-light windows on the ground and first floors to the outside. Number 20 extends further to the left, with a splayed corner featuring single windows beneath an overhanging second floor supported by brackets, and a ball finial. The interior has not been inspected. The property also includes attached front garden walls and piers with ball finials. The design was influenced by the earlier Bedford Park development of 1881.
