Description
Belmont Lodge and Grasmere are a pair of attached houses built in 1860 by E.W. Godwin. They are constructed from Pennant and Lias rubble with limestone dressings, featuring stone gable and ridge stacks, and a double Roman hipped roof. The houses have a double-depth plan and are designed in a Free Gothic style, standing two storeys high with a basement and attic, and comprising a four-window range.
The design is almost symmetrical, with entrances located at each end. The porches are supported by square three-quarter columns with square foliate capitals, leading to a heavy stilted two-centre arch and hipped roof. The porch for No. 10 is set into the return and has a 20th-century door, while No. 11 features a projecting lobby with a large framed door. The outer windows are narrow plate-glass sashes; No. 10 includes a canted full-height bay with brick mullions, foliate capitals, and shallow two-centre brick arches, while No. 11 has three narrow windows with stone mullions and capitals, along with a 20th-century first-floor window above.
The buildings also have two large 20th-century triangular tile-hung dormers and tall ribbed brick chimneys. Although the symmetry is lacking and the materials vary in type and color, along with the prominent stacks, this structure is considered an early example of Domestic Revival architecture. The interior has not been inspected.
