Description

Number 10 is an attached house built between 1717 and 1722, located on Orchard Street in Bristol. It features painted brick with limestone dressings, brick party wall stacks, and a pantile roof, showcasing an early Georgian style. The building has three storeys, an attic, and a basement, with a four-window range. Rusticated pilaster strips run through moulded strings at each floor, leading to a moulded parapet coping.

The right-hand doorway is adorned with a timber bracketed open pediment, an architrave with an over-light that contains a decorative metal fanlight, and a five-panel door with the top four panels raised. The windows have keyed brick flat arches, including a small 4/4-pane sash to the right of the doorway, two horned 6/6-pane sashes to the left, and hornless 6/6-pane sashes above. A hipped dormer is present on the roof.

Inside, the entrance stair hall features a beautifully designed rocaille ceiling. The ground-floor rooms are fully panelled and connected by a wide elliptical arch supported by fluted pilasters. The front room has an eared fire surround with a rocaille panel above it. The open-well stair is notable for its barleysugar balusters per tread, a fluted newel, and a curtail with a ramped, moulded rail. The stair divides at the half-landing, leading to a short flight to the rear service block. The first-floor fire surround includes a swag, and there are panelled shutters and four-panel doors throughout. The cellars are brick and tunnel vaulted.

The property also features attached wrought-iron front area railings with finials. Number 10 was laid out by the Corporation as part of a terrace with numbers 10 to 13, although it was built by separate developers. It forms a group with the other buildings on Orchard and Unity Streets.
