Description

A pair of attached houses dating from the mid-19th century, now used as shops and offices, located on Whiteladies Road, Clifton, Bristol. The houses are built of limestone ashlar with a roof that is not visible. They follow a double-depth plan and are in a late Georgian style. Each house is three storeys high with a basement, and has a two-window front. The pair present a symmetrical facade with a projecting central section, a cornice, and a parapet with a raised central section. The left-hand entrance is set back, and the right-hand entrance is further back and modelled on number 81 to the right. A dentil cornice runs along the ground floor, and the upper floors have recessed panels containing windows, separated by a wide sill band. Steps lead up to the outer doorways, which have impost mouldings. The overlights have margin panes, and the doorways contain two-panel doors. Number 85 has a glazed basement and ground-floor shop front, a tripartite first-floor window with a 4/4-pane sash flanked by 2/2-pane sashes, and an 8/8-pane sash on the second floor, with 4/4-pane sashes above the door in a shallow recessed surround. Number 83 features a later two-storey bay with tripartite windows and a bracketed cornice, as well as plate-glass sashes. The interior has not been inspected.
