Description

This is a terrace of ten houses, now used as offices, located on Alma Road in Clifton, Bristol, built around 1850. The houses are constructed from limestone ashlar and feature party wall stacks, with a roof that is not visible. They are designed in a late Georgian style, each having three storeys and a basement, arranged in a one-window range. The terrace presents a formal appearance, with alternate houses stepping forward, a banded ground floor with a drip, a dentil cornice, and a low parapet with small ears at the corners.

The terrace is divided by a first-floor recess that includes a single Tuscan column in antis, flanked by balustrades. The doorways are set in shallow recesses and feature overlights with margin panes and six-panel doors. The tripartite windows, which are smaller on the second floor, consist of four-over-four pane sashes flanked by two-over-two pane sashes. Balconies supported by cast-iron brackets are present on Nos 83 and 89-93.

No. 95 has a mid-19th century remodelled ground floor and right return, showcasing an arcade of semicircular arches with foliate capitals on the exterior, and cambered, keyed heads above plate-glass sashes. The interior has not been inspected.

Notable subsidiary features include attached cast-iron railings at Nos 83 and 87-95, as well as decorative carriage lamps at the doorways of Nos 83 and 85. The central column is a unique Mannerist feature. It is worth noting that the ground floors of No. 79 and 81 were removed around 1985 to provide access to the car park of the Clifton Down shopping centre, and 20th-century shop fronts were replaced with ashlar.
