Description
A terrace of eleven houses located on St Paul’s Road in Clifton, Bristol, built around 1850 by Thomas Pennington. The houses are constructed of limestone ashlar with party wall stacks, and the roof is not visible. They are designed with a double-depth plan and are in a late Georgian style. Each house is three storeys high with a basement, and has a single-window range. The façade features pilasters extending to a frieze, cornice, and parapet, with coped party walls. The ground floor is banded. There are recessed doorways on the right-hand side of each house, with overlights and six-panel doors. Architraves are present, with console cornices to the first floor. Bracketed slate balconies and cast-iron railings are also included, along with six-pane sashes on the first floor and three-pane sashes on the second. The right-hand return elevation has a symmetrical three-window range, including a semicircular-arched recess and a central doorway. Internally, the hall features a semicircular arch leading to a central, dogleg winder staircase with stick balusters, a curtail, and a cast-iron newel. A cupboard is situated between the staircase and the party wall. The cornices incorporate palmettes, and there are six-panel doors and shutters throughout. This terrace holds group value by virtue of its architectural style and contribution to the Clifton streetscape.
