Description

This is a terrace of ten houses located on Coronation Road in Bedminster, Bristol, dating to approximately 1820. The houses are constructed of stucco over rubble walls, with a pantile roof and brick stacks. They follow a double-depth plan and stand three storeys high, with a basement, each house having a two-window front. The design is a formal late-Georgian style, with the two end houses projecting forward as pavilions, their entrances recessed into the corners of the terrace. The end pavilions feature clasping pilasters with acanthus capitals, plain pilasters separate the individual houses, and the ground floor exhibits banded rustication. The recessed entrance doors have two round-topped, moulded panels, topped by floating cornices supported on consoles. The ground floor windows are tripartite with shouldered architraves. Surviving original windows are 6/6-pane sashes with margin bars. The end elevations have a 1:2-window range, and are blind at the end of the terrace. The interior has not been inspected, but first-floor windows are noted to have shutters. The terrace is attributed to an unknown architect, with H. Rumley associated with the property in 1851, as noted by Gomme. However, the terrace is shown on Ashmead's Map of Bristol from 1821, suggesting an earlier date of construction.
