Description

The Shirehampton War Memorial is a war memorial cross built in 1921 by Ernest Newton, who was a notable architect and member of the Royal Academy. It is made of York stone and features a freestanding cross on a square base that has three steps, with the top two steps being moulded. The cross has a tapering octagonal shaft that stands on a square base and a moulded plinth. At the top of the shaft, there is decorative banding and mouldings, along with a stone wheel cross placed atop an orb; both the cross and orb are later replacements. The square base is inscribed with the words: "TO THE HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF SHIREHAMPTON WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918," followed by the names of those commemorated.
