Description

West Gate is an office building located on Colston Avenue in Bristol, constructed in 1938 by architect Giles Gilbert Scott. This modernist style building is made of Portland ashlar and features a flat roof that is not visible. It has five storeys and an attic, with a symmetrical curved front that is set back above the ground floor from the longer side elevations. The front displays a moulded sill band, a full-length ground-floor entablature, and a blocking course, along with a coved first-floor sill band and a plain fourth-floor band. The side elevations have a cornice and parapet beneath the set-back fourth floor, with attic windows positioned beneath a deeply overhanging roof, featuring thick mullions at the front.

The central front doorway is framed by an architrave with roundels on the double doors and a cartouche above. On either side, there are full-width curved plate-glass shop windows, with late 20th-century casements above. The side returns have ground floors divided by thick mullion pilasters between plate-glass windows, with doorways at the penultimate bays on each end. First-floor balconies extend out from the entablature at both ends, with railings on the fourth floor and attic. The left return includes a right-hand doorway. The rear of the building mirrors the front with a matching seven-window range and end balconies, featuring splayed one-window corners and a carriage entrance at the northwest corner, while the east corner is blind. The interior was refurbished in 1991. West Gate serves as a prominent termination to the eastern end of Colston Avenue.
