Description

Number 27 is a house, now used as an office, built between 1788 and 1791 by William Paty. It features a limestone ashlar facade, a coursed Pennant rubble basement, brick gable stacks, and a slate double-pile roof. The building is designed in a mid-Georgian style and has three storeys, an attic, a basement, and a sub-basement, with a symmetrical front that includes a rusticated ground floor, a plat band, a cornice, and a parapet. The central doorway is adorned with pilasters supporting a Doric entablature and a pediment, featuring a semicircular arch with a metal fanlight and a six-panel door. The ground-floor windows have large keys and are fitted with 6/6-pane sashes, which are smaller on the second floor. The rear elevation is similar to the front. The rubble basement has segmental-arched Pennant lintels, and there are tall stacks separated by a semicircular arch. The roof features three hipped dormers.

To the left, there is a single-storey block from the 19th century with an ashlar tripartite window and a roof lantern. The interior has been extensively modernised, with a lobby that includes an elliptical arch leading to a left-hand open dogleg stair, which has a curtail, column-on-vase balusters, and a wreathed and ramped banded rail. There are also six-panel doors and panelled shutters. The property includes attached cast-iron front area railings and gates that curve up to the door, as well as attached rear rubble garden walls. This house is one of several on the street that have matching fronts but different plans for various clients.
