Description

Four gravestones are located in the churchyard of St Clement's, commemorating clergy and their families. These gravestones feature small Arts and Crafts inscriptions set within intricate Renaissance frames, which are likely designed by J D Sedding. The gravestones include one for Rev G D Tinling, who died in 1880, marked by a copper plaque in a white stone frame fixed to the east wall of the organ chamber. Another gravestone is for Rev Robert Sawfield, who died in 1889, featuring a cross under a gable, with an inscription flanked by panels of white foliage inlaid on a black background. There is also a gravestone for Mrs C M Tinling, who died in 1876, which is a pink sandstone cross under a semi-circular gable. Additionally, there is a gravestone for Rev W Purton, who died in 1891, of a similar design, probably by Henry Wilton, depicting a Crucifixion between tapered pilasters carved with foliage and a segmental pediment on a dentil cornice. The churchyard, along with the Church of St Clement, the Churchyard Cross, the graves, the Vicarage Walls, St Clement School, the Schoolhouse, and No 12A, form a cohesive group.
