Description
The building is a gentlemen's public convenience, constructed around 1905 by F.W. Lacey. It is made of red brick with rendering applied to the plinth, cornice, consoles, and dome, possibly using concrete. This small circular structure is partially sunk below the street level, located at the wide junction of Shelbourne Close and Holdenhurst Road. It features an Edwardian Lutyenesque style, characterized by a round brick drum supported by four inclined brick buttresses set on a plinth, and a plain architrave. Three of the faces have two small slit windows each, while the fourth face includes a flight of steps leading down to a panelled door, which is flanked by dwarf brick walls topped with decorative iron railings on stone coping. Above the drum, there is a hemispherical dome resting on four consoles, with a moulded cornice. Each of the four faces below the second drum has groups of three windows, some of which feature leading. This building is a clever and well-detailed design for a functional structure.
