Description
This memorial cross, dated 1909, is located approximately 12 metres north of the Church of All Saints in Branksome Park, Poole. It is made of polished grey granite and features a square stepped base with shallow slopes on the top surfaces. The cross shaft is square and stop-chamfered, topped with an elaborate cross head that includes carved shields of arms on the lower section. The front and back of the cross head display Chinese characters carved in relief, framed by a tabernacle with a trefoiled ogee-arched head within a crocketed gablet. At the top of the gablet is a keel shape, with carved shields of arms at either end. The base of the monument bears a commemorative inscription for Anne Loomis, wife of JH Hunt, who was the ex-commissioner of Chinese Imperial Customs in Hanitow, and who died at "Trinfield" Branksome Park on 14 June 1909 at the age of 53. Another inscription on the bottom step commemorates her husband, John Henry Hunt, who died at Trinfield in March 1949 at the age of 100. The monument is a notable blend of Chinese and Gothic architectural elements.
