Description

No 181, along with the adjoining gatepost and railing, was formerly the lodge to Highcliffe Castle. It is believed to have been built around 1775, coinciding with the construction of the house for the Earl of Bute by either Robert Adam or Capability Brown, although its architectural style suggests it may have been updated in 1830 when the current castle was constructed. The building is finished in stucco and features wide eaves and a hipped slate roof. It is two storeys tall, with the road-facing side showcasing a central round-arched recess that contains a blank window space. There are flanking side recesses topped with panels, and two windows on the side facing the drive, which are flanked by pilasters with niches and feature barred sashes. A small Doric porch is present, and there is an iron railing and stuccoed gatepost connected to the lodge. The former boundary wall of Highcliffe Castle creates a group with Nos 179 and 181, the milestone opposite, and St. Mark's Parish Church, including its Lychgate and the War Memorial in the churchyard.
