Description

Nos. 16, 17, and 18 are houses that have been converted into a bank. They were originally built in the mid-18th century and were refaced in the early 19th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The buildings are constructed from limestone ashlar, which is now painted, and the roof is hidden from view.

The structure has a double depth plan and stands three storeys high, featuring two unevenly spaced windows on each floor. There are moulded string courses on the first and second floors, along with a moulded cornice and parapet. The upper floor windows have chamfered reveals and are fitted with renewed six-over-six glazing bar sashes. The ground floor has a late 20th-century bank front that includes a door, two wide windows, another door, and a single plain sash window. There are chimney stacks at either end, with pots on the left side, and the gable end of the mansard roof remains on the right.

The interior has not been inspected and has undergone significant alterations recently. Historical records indicate that on December 20, 1765, the council decided to widen Lower Borough Walls to improve access from the bottom of Stall Street to Sawclose, which may have prompted the construction of these houses. However, the refacing and later alterations have obscured much of the original architectural evidence.
