Description
4 and 5 Beau Street is a house that has been converted into a shop with accommodation above. The front dates from the mid-18th century, while the building was heightened and a shop front was added in the early 19th century. It underwent alterations in 1991. The structure is made of limestone ashlar with a Welsh slate roof, which is only visible at the rear.
The building has three storeys and an attic, with a width of three windows. The ground floor features a shop front from around 1830, which has been altered in 1991. This shop front has a slight bow and consists of eight panes on the right and five panes on the left, flanked by doors. The right-hand door is narrower with six panels, while the left-hand door has two panels and three panes above. Both doors have narrow panelled jambs with decorative paterae and lozenge-glazed fanlights.
Above the shop front, the windows are six-over-six pane sashes typical of the late 18th century, with plain reveals. There is a moulded cornice above the second floor, which features breaks forward at either end, resembling capitals of non-existent pilasters. The attic storey also has six-over-six sashes. The building has a coped parapet, and the roof is not visible from the street. The rear elevation shows a heightened attic in ashlar with three six-over-six sashes and a slate roof. The interior has not been inspected.
Historically, John Wood mentioned in his 1749 work "Essay towards a Description of Bath" that there were fourteen houses in Beau Street, but it is unlikely that this building is one of them.
