Description

No. 3 Beau Street is a house that has been converted into a shop with accommodation above. It likely dates from the early 18th century but was raised in height in the late 18th century, with a shop front added in the early to mid-19th century. The building is constructed of limestone ashlar, which is now painted, and has a pantile roof that is visible at the rear.

The exterior features three storeys with a full attic above the cornice. There are three windows above the ground floor, with the center window being blind. The attic has two windows with raised flat surrounds and moulded architraves. The ground floor has a double-fronted shop with a central recessed entrance and a fascia above, which has a late 19th-century character that does not match earlier descriptions and must have been added later. The third floor has an early 18th-century coved cornice, while the eaves level features a late 18th-century coved cornice and a parapet, with the roof not visible.

The return elevation, made of rubble, has a surviving second-floor window architrave and a return cornice overlooking Bellott's Hospital, a previous building that was constructed around 1608 and demolished around 1859. The rear elevation is also rubble and features paired windows in dressed surrounds, with two more widely spaced windows on the attic floor, a parapet, and a hipped roof, but no visible stack.

The interior has not been inspected and is currently in the process of being completely gutted as of September 1996. Historically, this building was one of the fourteen houses noted by John Wood in his description of Beau Street around 1749. The present shop front was added around 1893 by T.B. Silcock, and after being vacant for a long time, the building was renovated around 1996.
