Description

No. 9 Stall Street is a shop with accommodation above, built around 1805, with 20th-century additions. The building is constructed from limestone ashlar, and its roof is not visible from the street. It has a double depth plan and stands three storeys high with two windows on the front. The ground floor features a late 20th-century shopfront that has character. The upper floors have six-over-six sash windows set in plain reveals, with the second-floor windows resting on a sill band. A cornice and parapet complete the exterior.

Historically, this building is part of a once balanced terrace that extended from York Street to Abbeygate Street, originally designed with a pattern of two:seven:three:seven:two bays, of which the northern eleven bays remain. The current design is hard to appreciate due to various alterations and the redevelopment of Nos. 12-15 at the southern end. The widening of Stall Street was approved under the Bath Improvement Act of 1789, with plans by Thomas Baldwin, while John Palmer, the City Architect, was noted in the Council Minutes on March 20, 1797, for preparing plans to set back the frontages in Stall Street. The design for this row, dated 1805 but unsigned, is preserved in the Bath Reference Library. The formation of York Street in 1806 aligns with the construction of this terrace, which is part of the Neoclassical remodelling of the city centre, although it occupies a site with a much longer history of building.
