Description

15 and 16 Northgate Street are houses that have been converted into shops with accommodation above. They were built in the late 18th century or early 19th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The buildings are made of limestone ashlar, which is now painted, and feature Welsh slate roofs.

The houses are three storeys tall with attics and have two windows each, although the sill levels differ. They appear to have been constructed together, but there is some indication of a vertical joint between them. The shopfronts, dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, are both double fronted and include pilasters, with No. 16 featuring consoles, making it the more elaborate and earlier of the two. The windows are plain sash windows set in reveals; No. 16 has slightly lower sills on the first floor and slightly higher ones on the second floor. The second floor of No. 15 has late 18th-century style six-over-six sash windows. The buildings have a moulded cornice and parapet, and a mansard roof with two gabled dormers on each side, also featuring six-over-six sashes, along with stone stacks topped with pots.

The interiors were only inspected on the ground floor, which did not reveal anything of special interest. These houses are located just inside the line of the City Wall and overlook the site of the Northgate, which was demolished in 1755. They also occupy part of the site of St Mary 'intra-muros' Church, which was demolished in the 17th century.
