Description

No. 13 Northgate Street is a late 18th-century shop with living accommodation above, potentially built on earlier foundations and significantly altered in the mid-19th century. Around 1999, further alterations were made to the building.

The exterior is constructed of limestone ashlar, with a roof that is not visible. The building is four storeys high, plus a basement, and has a narrow frontage of two bays. The ground floor features a shopfront with a stall riser and a canted entrance on the left side. The main window has three lights with a segmental head, narrow timber mullions, pilasters on either end with consoles, a fascia, and a cast iron balconette above. A recessed doorway provides access to the ground floor, with a separate entrance to the upper floors on the left. The windows on the upper floors have chamfered arrises, plain sashes, and a continuous cill band to the second floor. The building is topped with a cornice, a parapet, and a stone stack with decorative pots. The return wall on the right displays evidence of alterations and extensions from various periods, and contains two six-over-six sash windows. The rear elevation was not inspected.

The shop interior has been altered, but the remainder of the interior was not inspected.
