Description
No. 1 Upper Borough Walls is a shop with accommodation above, built around 1810 and repaired in 1983, with a new shopfront added in 1988. It is part of a group with Nos. 1-9 New Bond Street and Nos. 2-6 Upper Borough Walls, reconstructed by Alec French and Partners. The building is made of limestone ashlar, and the roof is not visible from the street.
It is a four-storey structure with a two-window front facing Upper Borough Walls, a single window at the canted corner, and three windows on Northgate Street. The late 20th-century shopfront features a corner entrance and is divided by rusticated stone pilasters. The upper windows are all sashes in plain reveals, with six-over-six panes except for the third floor, which has three-over-six sashes. Incised Roman capitals at the second floor spell out "UPPER BOROUGH WALLS." There is a sill band at the second floor for the first four windows, along with a fluted frieze, cornice, and parapet. The interior was not inspected, and the shop does not have any notable features.
