Description
No. 17 Northgate Street is a shop with accommodation above, remodeled around 1880 from a late 18th-century building. It features limestone ashlar construction with a Welsh slate roof and is situated on a quarter circle plan at the corner of Bridge Street. The building has three storeys, an attic, and a cellar, with three windows on the first floor that have eared architraves and cornices above. The central window is adorned with an open segmental pediment supported by carved consoles, along with swag and scroll ornamentation. All windows are plain sashes with plate glass.
The shopfront is designed with composite pilasters and an ornate entablature that includes consoles and garlands, complemented by plate glass windows. The cornice leads to a parapet and a mansard roof, which features a tripartite flat-topped dormer with plain sashes flanking a fixed four-light window. A tall single stack with a pot rises against the stack of No. 16.
The interior has not been inspected. This building holds significant group value and has remained unchanged in appearance since late 19th-century photographs were taken, likely since its remodeling. It may have been altered alongside No. 1 Bridge Street. The construction of Bridge Street was approved by the Council to facilitate the building of Pulteney Bridge.
