Description
No. 1 Bridge Street is a house that has been converted into a shop with accommodation above. It was built around 1775 and underwent alterations in the late 19th century, with a shopfront added in 1922 by A.J. Taylor. The building is constructed from limestone ashlar and has a Welsh slate roof.
It features three storeys, an attic, and a cellar, with a single depth plan and a rear extension. The exterior includes a 1922 shopfront, three first-floor windows with cornices and architraves, and two second-floor windows with architraves, with a gap in the center. All windows are late 19th-century plain plate glass sashes. A crowning cornice and parapet extend from No. 17 Northgate Street but are stepped above No. 2 Bridge Street. The mansard roof has paired flat-topped dormers, and there is a rear rubble stack without pots. The front of the building shows signs of having been altered in conjunction with No. 17 Northgate Street, possibly by the current tenants, Mallory, who have occupied the premises since at least 1906.
The history of Bridge Street dates back to the decision made by the Council in 1769 to approve the construction of Pulteney Bridge.
