Description

Symonds Monument is a chest tomb located immediately to the east of the Church of St John the Baptist. It commemorates George Symonds, who died in 1830, and is signed by Harris. The monument is made of limestone ashlar and features an inset inscribed marble panel along with other ashlar panels, all set within moulded surrounds. It is designed in a heavy Greek Revival style, with a moulded base raised on two steps, a moulded cornice, and a raised top adorned with acroteria shaped like anthemions.
