Description
This is a terrace of eleven symmetrical houses built around 1795, with an addition from the 19th century, designed by John Palmer. The houses are constructed from limestone ashlar and have double-pitched slate mansard roofs with dormers and moulded stacks to the left party walls. They are arranged with double-depth plans.
The houses are three storeys high with attics and basements, each featuring a three-window facade. They have coped parapets, cornices, and ground floor platbands. Most windows are six-over-six sash windows with plate glass, and many have pedimented stone doorcases. Six-panel doors are located to the right of each house, often accompanied by a small window to the right. Number 16, the central house, has a prominent pediment and rusticated ground floor, along with an early 19th century Regency canopied first-floor balcony with French windows.
The interior of the houses has not been inspected.
Notable features include the area railings at numbers 12, 14, 15, 17, 18, and 19. Number 19 has a wrought iron veranda, number 17 has a thin rococo doorway, and number 18 features a doorway with Doric columns and a pediment. Numbers 15, 14, and 12 have doorways with Doric pilasters and pediments. The terrace exhibits group value with other listed buildings in Lower East Hayes, on London Road.
