Description

A terrace of eight houses located on Bathwick Street, dating to circa 1790 and designed by Thomas Baldwin as part of the Bathwick Estate scheme. The buildings are constructed from limestone ashlar with double-pitched slate mansard roofs, featuring dormers and stacks to some party walls.

The terrace occupies a site that slopes upwards slightly from number 1. The houses are three storeys high and each is one window wide, with a coped parapet, lintel frieze, second floor sill course, ground floor cornice and plinth, swept up from numbers 1 and 3. The plate glass tripartite sash windows incorporate raised surrounds rising from the ground floor cornice; those on the first floor are topped by pediments supported by four consoles, with double festoons to the friezes flanking the central sashes. Numbers 1 and 2 have lowered first floor sills. Number 1 also has a cobweb fanlight over a six-panel door on the left, while number 2 features a trellised balconette to the first floor and a plain fanlight over a six-panel door on the right. Number 3 has lowered first floor sills and a plain fanlight to a six-panel door on the left. Numbers 4 and 5 are a symmetrical pair with original first floor sills and plain fanlights over paired six-panel doors. Numbers 6 and 7 are similar to 4 and 5, although number 7 has a low first floor balconette with a lyre design in the centre, and a 20th-century door. Number 8 is similar to number 6 with a blocked door to the right. The three-window right return has been rebuilt, and incorporates a late 19th-century enclosed porch with a returned coped parapet, cornice, and a bolection-moulded six-panel door. The interiors of the houses have not been inspected.
