Description
The north entrance to Wellow Tunnel, located 100 yards north of White Baines on Bull's Hill, was built around 1800 for the Somersetshire Coal Canal. The canal's surveyor was William Smith, known as "the Father of British Geology," and it was supervised by John Rennie, with engineering by William Bennet. The entrance features coursed, squared rubble with freestone dressings, a semi-circular arch with a keystone, and a decorative band. There are pilaster strips on either side and a high coped parapet. The interior of the tunnel is lined with masonry. The southern branch of the Coal Canal, which connects Midford and Radstock, was completed in 1798 but was abandoned in 1815 when a tramway was constructed along its route.
