Description
Nos. 3, 4, and 4A on Burton Street are a pair of terrace houses that have been converted into shops. They were originally built in the early 19th century, with later alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The buildings are constructed of limestone ashlar and feature a roof that is either concrete tile or slate.
The exterior of the buildings shows that they were built as a pair, but each has been modified differently. They are three storeys high with an attic in a mansard roof and have three windows across the front. No. 3 has a concrete tile roof with a paired sash dormer above two deep twelve-pane sash windows, each with an original balconette. There is a blank bay to the right with newer masonry. The first floor features three large plain sash windows, with the right window set in a recessed panel. The late 19th-century pilaster shopfront has elaborately modelled scrolled consoles supporting the cornice and a blind box. Additional details include a thin platband over the first floor, a lintel, frieze, dentil cornice, blocking course, and a parapet with a deep ridge stack to the left.
No. 4 has a paired twelve-pane sash dormer in slate on the mansard roof, above a twelve-pane window on the second floor. The first floor windows have been replaced by paired small-pane casements with a shallow transom light, and the pilaster shopfront is similar to that of No. 3. The trim is also consistent with No. 3, and there is a coped party division with a deep ridge stack on the left side. A lead downpipe with a small hopperhead is located between the two properties. The interiors have not been inspected.
