Description
No. 5 Burton Street is a commercial building that houses offices and shops, dating from the mid-19th century with some alterations made in the 20th century. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and has a slate roof. The building has a flat quadrant design with five bays that return to Upper Borough Walls, along with a single straight bay facing Burton Street, topped with a hipped roof.
The exterior features four storeys, with all windows being plain sash. The third floor has small square windows set in eared architraves, with broad panel links at the heads, a sill band, and projecting moulded sills supported on brackets. The second floor windows have flat segmental heads, also in eared architraves, with scrolled centers and small lion heads, and their sills are positioned below a plinth band. Above the first floor lights, which have flat segmental heads and eared architraves joined by a thin mould, there is a fluted frieze and flat segmental cornices. The ground floor has been replaced by a continuous shopfront from 1971. The main entablature features deep brackets over each window and a shallow blocking course with a parapet. The building has ashlar stacks with bracketed cappings.
The interior has not been inspected. This building is included for its group value and is depicted in a drawing by C.E. Davis from 1880, which shows his design for the adjacent premises.
