Description
No. 2 Burton Street is a mid-19th century office building with a shop that was added in 1906 and has undergone late 20th-century alterations. Designed by C. Bryn Oliver, the building is constructed of limestone ashlar, and the roof is not visible.
The exterior features a narrow, tall frontage with four floors and three plain sash windows, each framed by moulded architraves, cornices, and a sill band above sunk panelled aprons. The late 19th-century stone shopfront is notable for its channelled pilasters and deep projecting brackets, topped by a moulded cornice and a plain fascia that includes a late 20th-century plate glass insert. A bold moulded eaves cornice adds to the character of the building.
The interior has not been inspected. The close-set and large windows provide a striking contrast to the more domestic quality of the adjoining buildings, making this a good example of commercial architecture from the mid-century.
