Description
The south-west entrance to Wellow Tunnel, located 20 yards north-west of Church Farm, dates from around 1800 and was built for the Somersetshire Coal Canal. The canal was surveyed by William Smith, known as "the Father of British Geology," and supervised by John Rennie, with engineering by William Bennet. The entrance features coursed, squared rubble with freestone dressings, a semi-circular arch with a keystone, a band, pilaster strips on either side, and a high coped parapet. The interior of the tunnel is lined with masonry. The southern branch of the Somersetshire Coal Canal, which runs from Midford to Radstock, was completed in 1798 but was abandoned in 1815 when a tramway was constructed along its route.
