Description

This is a raised pavement and associated features dating to around 1820, constructed for the Bathwick Estate. The pavement, approximately 200 metres long and rising to around 3 metres in height at its centre, is built on a substantial sub-structure with ramps leading up from gabled piers at each end. It is constructed from limestone rubble with pennant stone paving, and features wrought iron railings with moulded points. Freestone gatepiers mark the edges. Five lamp standards with curved supports are located at the north end, springing from the wall below. The structure has group value with the gatepiers and walls to the gardens of numbers 1-20 Darlington Place. This is a late example of the Bath tradition of raised pavements, designed to create a promenade overlooking Sydney Buildings and beyond.
