Description

This is a group of three pairs of semi-detached houses located on Pulteney Road, built in the mid-19th century. The buildings are constructed from limestone ashlar with hipped slate roofs, featuring wide bracketed eaves and moulded stacks to the party walls and rear returns. The houses follow a double depth plan, with set-back outer ranges.

Nos. 24 and 25, now the Siena Hotel, are arranged as three-window ranges. They include encircling plinths and stone bracketed eaves set on a moulded string course. The windows have stop-chamfered arrises and plate glass sash windows. A second floor sill band runs along the facade, and a first floor lintel band has cornices above the windows. A lintel band with cornices is also present on the ground floor. Windows to the first floors and outer ranges of the ground floors have raised, eared and shouldered surrounds. The centre of the ground floor features two canted bays with coped parapets and cornices. Each return has steps leading to bolection moulded four-panel doors within enclosed, single-storey porches with parapets and cornices, as well as two semicircular arched windows.

Nos. 26 and 27, and Nos. 28 and 29, are similarly designed, arranged as two-window ranges, with a modillion corniced central stack, paired timber brackets to the wide eaves, and an encircling eaves band. The upper floors feature sash windows with horizontal glazing bars. Windows to the second floor have raised surrounds, whereas those to the first floor are adorned with cornices on four consoles. The ground and lower ground floors have tripartite windows, with segmental curved bays. The bays of Nos. 26 and 27 are distinguished by cornices and relieving arches above; bays of 28 and 29 have partly restored segmental pierced parapets at the level of the first floor sill band. They also include steps up to four-panel doors with narrow overlights, semicircular arched stair windows to the returns, and full-height narrow recessed panels corresponding with party walls. The interiors were noted to contain one white marble and two slate fire surrounds. The interiors of the remaining properties have not been inspected.
