Description

A large, end-of-terrace house, dating to around 1800 and altered in the mid-19th century, now used as flats. The house is constructed of limestone ashlar with a slate mansard roof and moulded stacks to the party walls. The symmetrical front facade faces Edward Street and has four storeys including an attic, and a basement, with a five-window arrangement. The Edward Street entrance is flanked by two full-height, wide, shallow segmental bays each containing two windows. Features include a coped parapet, an attic cornice, a second-floor cornice, a first-floor sill band, a ground-floor platband and banded rustication to the ground floor, which is returned to the right. Windows are mostly three/three-pane sashes to the attic, and six/six-pane sashes to the other floors, some with crown glass. Ground-floor windows have horns. The first-floor central window has a moulded architrave and cornice supported by consoles; the flanking windows in the bays have trellised balconettes. Steps lead up to a projecting porch with Doric columns within the supporting wall, a guttae frieze cornice, a blocking course, and a trellised balcony. A semicircular arch is to the returns. The eight-panel door has margin lights and a shallow segmental fanlight. The return to Vane Street has a three-window range with similar windows, except the ground floor has plate glass sashes. A substantial mid-19th century cast iron balcony is on cast iron brackets with a cyma-domed canopy on the first floor. The interior has not been inspected. Area railings with a gate enclose the property. Panelled piers with cornices and caps flank the steps and support fine lamp standards with anthemion motifs to the tops and bases.
