Description
This is a pillar box located outside No. 51 on Great Pulteney Street, dating from around 1865. It is made of cast iron and is designed in a hexagonal shape known as a "Penfold." The top is swept domed and features falling leaf motifs between ridges on each facet. It has a bud finial on a moulded base, a cornice adorned with large beads, and a frieze displaying the royal coat-of-arms above the posting slit. The words "POST OFFICE" are positioned on either side of the slit, and there is a moulded frame for the posting times notice above a scrolled V R monogram. The door has canted sides, is hinged on the left, spans the front, and fastens to the right over a plinth.
