Description

Nos. 1-5 are a row of five terrace houses built around 1795, with 19th-century additions, designed by John Palmer. The houses are constructed from limestone ashlar and feature double-pitched slate mansard roofs with paired dormers and moulded stacks on the party walls. They are three storeys tall, with attics and basements, and each house has a two-window range. The exterior includes coped parapets, cornices, friezes, and ground floor platbands.

Nos. 1-4 have six-over-six pane sash windows, and to the right of each house is a stone Tuscan doorcase with engaged columns, an entablature, and a pediment, along with six-panel doors that are glazed at the top with small windows to the right. No. 5, which is attached to a chapel, features late 19th-century plate glass sash windows. The right-hand range of houses is slightly stepped forward and has tripartite windows. The left-hand range, which is attached to the chapel, has a single window above a wide flattened segmental arch supported by Tuscan pilasters, with a wrought iron lamp bracket in the center. The entrance is set back to create a small courtyard that shelters the entrance to the chapel.

Most of the houses have well-preserved area railings. The terrace was designed to complement a prominent central chapel created by John Palmer for John Jelly, who was an attorney and clerk to the parish of Walcot. Nos. 1-5 were affected by a bomb blast during World War II. Nos. 1-3 were listed on August 11, 1972.
